There are vast barren spaces in our urban and suburban environments that go largely unnoticed: empty lots, asphalt deserts, concrete caverns, and paved territories beneath overpasses in the periphery of our collective gaze, where pedestrians rarely venture. These spaces are the open terrain we call ‘Un-Space Ground,’ which beckon for enlivened activity in this time of occupation. – Woodham and Oliver

ARTspace is a conference-within-the-conference, whose programming is designed by artists to promote dialogue about visual arts practice and its relation to critical discourse, as well as professional development issues.

This year the all day Saturday symposia Art in the Public Realm organized and chaired by L.A. interdisciplinary artist, writer and educator Jacki Apple and L.A. artist Timothy Nolan, will feature two panel sessions Activism and Interventions (featuring Ed Woodham), and The Global Environment, plus an interactive open forum discussion Creating New Paradigms for the Future (to also include Woodham).

Brian Black & Ryan Bulis - BASKETBALL BACKPACK

Wearing specially designed backpacks that suspend the board and rim above their heads, the players engage in a one-on-one game of hoops. At the game’s conclusion, the winner will be presented with the championship trophy.

Carolina Mayorga & Craig Garrett - The L.A. SOPA TIMES FOOD CART

This interactive performance artist/food vendor offers an eco-friendly, vegetarian lunch option that supports the local economy as it recycles the very pages of the L.A. Times and makes use of its robust advertising and sports sections.

Christina Sukhgian Houle - MIGRATION PATTERNS DURING WARTIME, EXHIBITION

A performer dressed in a sculptural costume constructed primarily out of toy stuffed animal pelts will solicit a platform and audience to hear a presentation on belongingness and otherness.
